Welcoming New Philadelphians – The Nationalities Service Center
Philadelphia is home to people from all over the world, and has become a welcoming place for refugees and new citizens arriving from dozens of countries every year. At the front of this mission is the Nationalities Service Center, whose office is located at 1216 Arch St in Center City. The NSC provides a variety of services that begin the moment someone arrives in the city, and continues to support new residents with a range of programming throughout their time in Philadelphia. The NSC offers comprehensive refugee resettlement services that help new arrivals secure housing, jobs, enroll in school, and get comfortable in their new surroundings. The NSC provides education on what life is like in Philadelphia and the US in general, English classes, case management, anti-human trafficking support, healthcare and employment access, legal support, interpretation and translation services, children’s programming, support and community groups, and so much more.
There’s so many ways to get involved with the NSC! Anyone can complete a quick standard background screening and volunteer their time with a number of projects, which are posted online in their project catalog where volunteers can sign up anytime. Opportunities include sorting donations, setting up housing for new refugees, assisting with food services, helping run childcare, guiding new NSC clients through SEPTA, going grocery shopping, offering translation and interpretation services (Ukrainian and Russian speakers needed!) and so much more. You can also always donate items off their wishlist or make a financial donation at any time.
Thanks to the Nationalities Service Center for all the amazing work you do!
