Learn More About the Awesome Neighborhoods That Make Up Our City

Philadelphia is called the City of Brotherly Love, and is also known as the city of neighborhoods. Depending on who you talk to, you can find as many as 150 distinct neighborhoods throughout the city, some of which are subject to debate regarding their boundaries and North/South/East/West/Center designation. The one thing that is indisputable is that Philly neighborhoods are full of distinct character, amazing businesses, delicious restaurants, and awesome people.

While searching through Google Maps may be the best way to check out the locations of all the 100+ neighborhoods, the map below shows the locations of some of the major neighborhoods in the city. Tap or hover over the “plus” to see more!

Center City

Callowhill

Callowhill, also known as the Loft District, is a formerly industrial neighborhood that features loft-style apartments in converted factories and warehouses. Callowhill is located above Chinatown and below Poplar, situated in between Vine Street Expressway and Spring Garden Street. The neighborhood features lots of trendy spots to enjoy Philly’s nightlife scene, such as Prohibition Taproom, Love City Brewing, Liquid Arts, and NOTO nightclub. The Cliffs of Callowhill and Callowhill Archery are awesome places for rock climbing and archery in the city! There’s even places to enjoy nature by exploring Rail Park, a walking park located on the old rail line.

Fairmount

Fairmount is a historic neighborhood located in the heart of Philadelphia. It is known for its tree-lined streets, beautiful parks, and historic architecture. The neighborhood is home to several museums, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Rodin Museum, as well as the scenic Schuylkill River Trail. Fairmount is also known for its strong community spirit and active civic organizations, which work to preserve the neighborhood’s historic character and promote community engagement. The area boasts a wide range of housing options, from historic rowhomes to modern high-rise apartments. Fairmount’s central location and excellent public transportation options make it a popular choice for both families and young professionals. Old City

Old City is a historic neighborhood located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is known for its cobblestone streets, brick buildings, and landmarks such as Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and the Betsy Ross House. Old City played a significant role in the founding of the United States, as it was the site of the Continental Congress and the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Rittenhouse Square, a large park located in the center of the neighborhood, is a popular gathering spot for locals and visitors alike. The park features a variety of outdoor art installations, fountains, and a weekly farmers’ market. The surrounding streets are lined with historic brownstone homes and elegant mansions, many of which have been converted into high-end shops and restaurants. Some of the most popular restaurants include Parc, DanDan, The Dandelion, and Barclay Prime. Overall, Rittenhouse offers a unique blend of history, culture, and luxury that makes it one of Philadelphia’s most desirable neighborhoods.

North

Brewerytown

Brewerytown is a neighborhood located in the northwestern part of Philadelphia. Historically known for its many breweries, the area has undergone a revitalization in recent years that is attracting more homeowners to the area. The neighborhood boasts a mix of old and new architecture, with charming rowhomes and renovated loft apartments. Residents can enjoy a variety of dining and entertainment options, including popular restaurants (Green Eggs Cafe, RyeBrew) and bars (2637brew, Crime and Punishment Brewing Company), cafes (The Monkey & The Elephant, iMunch Cafe), and boutique shops (Search + Rescue Drygoods, Holistic Jawn). Northeast

Oxford Circle

Oxford Circle is a neighborhood located in the Northeast section of Philadelphia. It is known for its diverse community, bustling business district, and close proximity to major transportation hubs. The area is home to many families and young professionals, who appreciate the affordability of the homes and the many amenities that the neighborhood offers. The community has many active neighborhood groups who organize events throughout the year. The main commercial artery of Oxford Circle is Castor Avenue, which is lined with shops, restaurants (On Charcoal, Picanha Brazilian Steakhouse), and other businesses. Overall, Oxford Circle is a great place to live and work in the city, while maintaining close proximity to Bucks County and I-95, with quick access to New Jersey and New York.

Northwest

Germantown

Germantown is a historic neighborhood located in Northwest Philadelphia. It is one of the city’s oldest settlements and is known for its rich history and cultural significance. The neighborhood is home to several important landmarks, including the Germantown White House, the oldest surviving presidential residence in the United States, and the Johnson House, a stop on the Underground Railroad. Germantown is also home to several historic churches, including the First United Methodist Church of Germantown (active since 1796)  and the Germantown Mennonite Historic Trust (from 1770). In addition to its historic significance, Germantown has a thriving arts and cultural scene, with several galleries, theaters, and community organizations promoting local artists and businesses. Local tip: Germantown is the spot for vegan cuisine, with amazing restaurants including Power Up Cafe, All the Way Live Cafe, and The Nile Cafe for 100% vegan options. The nearby Cairo Kitchen On The Go also has an excellent vegan menu in addition to their non-vegan faire. The neighborhood is easily accessible by public transportation, with several SEPTA stations located nearby.

Manayunk

Manayunk is a neighborhood located in the northwest section of Philadelphia. It is known for its picturesque Main Street, which is lined with shops, restaurants, and bars. Some popular spots include The Couch Tomato, Taqueria Amor, and Winnie’s, to name just a few. The neighborhood has a rich history as a manufacturing hub, and many of its historic buildings have been converted into loft apartments and artist studios. Manayunk is also home to several parks and green spaces, including the scenic Wissahickon Valley Park, which offers hiking and biking trails along the Wissahickon Creek. South

East Passyunk

East Passyunk is a trendy neighborhood located in South Philadelphia. It is known for its vibrant commercial district along East Passyunk Avenue, which is lined with an eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, and bars. The neighborhood is a foodie’s paradise, with a variety of restaurants serving up everything from traditional Italian cuisine to modern gastropub fare.
